Energy storage is key to integrating renewable power. Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) systems store power in the magnetic field in a superconducting coil. Once the coil is charged, the current will not stop and the energy can in theory be stored indefinitely. This technology avoids the need for lithium for batteries. The energy security and environmental concerns are forcing governments to change both energy and transportation systems in the context of smart grids and smart cities. In this regard, a high interest in upgrading transportation systems using electric vehicles (EVs) and E-buses has been noticed. This is the point where mobility meets electricity and brings new challenges and opportunities, especially in the integration with modern power systems. The main impacts would be on the demand-side and the distribution network. These impacts would be also refected in the operation, control, security, and stability of transmission systems. In the same context, the rapid and large-scale deployment of various renewable energy systems have considerably impacted the electric grid structure by moving from conventional generation to variable distributed energy production. This creates a new grid architecture characterized by growing variability and uncertainties.
