The Discovery of Judo by my friend Ron Desormeaux, 5 th dan, which I have been privileged to preview, is unique amongst judo texts, in that it not only covers the principle concepts of judo practice, but delves into the history and development of judo from its formation in Japan, and as a worldwide entity, touching on expansion into Europe and with development in Canada, from the early 1900's to the present day. Along the way, Kodokan judo for most judoka has morphed from a martial art to an Olympic sport, and much of the philosophical and moral aspects relating to overall personal development have been neglected or lost over the years. The initial foundation of judo by Kano Jigoro Shihan stemmed from his exposure at a young age to other martial arts as practiced in the ancient bujutsu ryuha, primarily the Tenjin Shinyo Ryu and Kito Ryu schools of jujutsu.

Publie en 1933 a Tokyo, BUDO RENSHU nous montre les techniques du fondateur de l’Aïkido, comme elles etaient enseignees au Kobukan dojo entre 1931 et le debut de la guerre du Pacifique. Les croquis de l'ouvrage sont de Takako Kunigoshi, qui fut une des rares disciples de O Sensei à cette epoque. Elle a gagne le respect du fondateur par son serieux dans la pratique. Kunigoshi Sensei etait tres respectee par ses collegues masculins du Kobukan. Au depart, ce n'était qu'un aide-memoire pour elle-meme, mais Morihei Ueshiba l'encouragea a aller plus loin et sous sa supervision, en apportant des suggestions et des corrections, l'ouvrage prit la forme definitive. Celui-ci etait donne aux pratiquants qui avaient fait beaucoup de progres aussi bien sur le plan technique que spirituel. Il exista peu d'exemplaires et le plus important reside dans les dessins puisque les explications etaient tres succinctes.

This hardcover edition was published in 1979 and the author's street fighting choice is boxing combined with weight training. He gives solid reasons why he feels boxing is the ideal street fighting art. Since he has successfully used boxing methods, including dirty strikes such as eye and throat strikes in street fights, he does have practical and real life experience. Chapters include: What type of street fighting should you choose, a boxing attack you can use in the street, using your muscles in the street, building muscles to get in fighting shape, weight training, buiding an iron grip, nutrition, roadwork for endurance, and courage: Your real power. The photographs are all black and white and some are not very clear; nevertheless, this book has some very good practical information for anyone who is interested in the use of boxing techniques for street self-defense.
