Вопросами построения шрифта занимался великий художник и ученый Леонардо да Винчи (1452 — 1519). Он считал, что шрифт и архитектура находятся в тесной внутренней связи, поэтому законы построения у них должны быть общими, и если античная архитектура имеет в своей основе пропорции человеческого тела, то классическая соразмерность должна быть использована, по мнению художника, и при построении шрифта. Леонардо да Винчи строил буквы по квадрату, разделенному по высоте на десять равных частей. Сохранились образцы букв, сконструированных великим мастером.
