While many programming languages are used in video games, the most common are C++ and C# (pronounced “C plus plus” and “C sharp,” respectively). C++ is a “low-level” language which compiles directly to machine code, allowing for better performance, but requires the programmer to manage low-level functions (e.g., memory allocation) more directly. C# is considered a “high-level” language which automatically handles many of those functions, but this comes with the price of harder performance management. The main language is generally chosen at the engine level, for instance, the Unreal game engine uses a modified version of C++, while the Unity game engine uses C# with bespoke platform compilers to help with compatibility. This book will be of great interest to all beginner and aspiring game producers.
