A complete reference atlas of acupuncture and acupressure points, this newly updated guide by renowned shiatsu, qigong, and bodywork teacher Chris Jarmey and acupuncturists Ilaria Bouratinos and Lynn Pearce illustrates how to best locate and treat nearly 400 acupoints throughout the body. Lavishly illustrated with full-color examples, this updated fourth edition offers comparisons of Eastern and Western teaching models as well as new theoretical material to help instill intuitive understanding for students and early practitioners of acupuncture.
The first part of the book, “Theory,” describes the essence of acupuncture from both traditional Chinese and Western medical perspectives with chapters on needling considerations, the principles of locating acupoints, and myotome, dermatome, viscerotome, and sclerotome maps of the body. The second part, “Practice,” then guides the reader methodically through acupuncture points of the 12 main channels/meridians, plus the conception and governor vessels and additional non-channel points. The locations of nearly 400 points are described in precise detail and clearly illustrated through color diagrams, along with explanations of each point’s actions, indications, and contraindications.
It is widely accepted that acupuncture originated in early China, within a system that we now recognise as the Chinese medical model. That model also included herbal medicine, exercise therapies such as Qi Gong, Tai Chi, diet, meditation, cupping, moxibustion and Tui Na. It is a whole-system approach, of which acupuncture generally remains part in China. Westernisation has led to a more scientific approach, but a whole-system practice remains strong and present within Chinese society.
Since finding its way into the Western medical framework, acupuncture has become more of a discrete system of its own. The application of biomedical research, on the one hand, has looked more and more minutely at a global system of treatment (which some practitioners lament). On the other hand, this research has given us more and more reasons why and how acupuncture works, which satisfies the Western model and can help determine how acupuncture can best be used.
While retaining the Chinese medical model explanations for points, we have expanded the underlying concepts behind these explanations in Chapter 1, although some of the more subtle theories have been removed, as they demand their own text. We have introduced sections on the Western medical approach and on point selection for both approaches. Along with the segmental reference charts in Chapter 6, the inclusion of myotomes and dermatomes in the headings for each point should help those practitioners using the segmental approach. Chapters 8–21 have larger, more dynamic, illustrations of the meridians at the start of each chapter, enabling the student to see the relation between the course of the meridian, its connections and some of the key points, which are consistently highlighted.
Honoring the traditional Eastern roots of acupuncture in parallel with modern approaches of Western medicine, this book is an essential resource for practitioners of all levels seeking to deepen their understanding of working with acupoints.
