The distributed energy resource (DER) refers to the small-scale energy generation and storage units, as well as flexible loads. Microgrids are distribution systems with a group of interconnected loads and DERs within clearly defined electrical boundaries that act as a single controllable entity with respect to the main grid. A microgrid can connect and disconnect from the main grid to enable it to operate in both grid-connected and islanded modes. This book focuses on three research problems of the DERs in the microgrid: planning, operation, and control. The planning aims to determine the optimal size and site as well as investment plan of the DER units in the microgrid over a long-time horizon, e.g., 5 years to 20 years; The operation of the microgrid focuses on the operational dispatch horizon over a short-term time interval, e.g., from 5 minutes to a few hours or one day. The objective is to dispatch the DERs for optimal energy management and bus voltage regulation; The control of the microgrid is concerned on the real-time timescale, i.e., milliseconds to seconds, and the objective is to maintain the voltages and frequency within desired operational ranges, achieve power sharing and balancing among DERs and loads.
