Due to the structural flexibility, large surface area, tailorable pore size and functional tenability, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can lead to materials with unique properties. This book covers the fundamental aspects of MOFs, their synthesis and modification, including their potential applications in different domains. The major focus is on applications including chemical, biosensors, catalysis, drug delivery, supercapacitors, energy storage, magnetics and their future perspectives. Due to the structural flexibility, large surface area, tailorable pore size and functional tenability, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become a fascinating class of materials and are continuing to inspire both scientists and engineers. MOFs are the combination of organic and inorganic structure elements that can lead to materials with unique properties, and the choice of initial building units makes it possible to vary some parameters, such as the pore size, density as well as the specific surface area, which opens up new ways to produce materials with tailored physicochemical properties. This ability to fine-tune MOF properties is evident in various areas, both academic and industrial, with potential practical applications including gas storage and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, chemical sensing, biomedical applications, fabrication of membranes or thin films and many more. Hence, these materials play a key role in life every day and their effect on the future of humanity’s technology. Therefore, exciting developments, new advancements and foundations, direction for further exploring MOFs for their applications and critical analysis of the research are necessary to provide the field’s current status.

This book presents a balanced blend of fundamental research such as principles and characteristics of machining of difficult-to-cut materials and coating techniques and in-depth practical information on coatings techniques and classifications, the effect of coating parameters on machining responses, and finite element analysis of the machining performance of coated tools. In addition to the benefits of the thin-film deposition on the cutting tools, the limitations of the coating deposition techniques and the coating properties are also discussed. This book aims at bridging the gap between thin-film characterizations and the application of thin-films for machining difficult-to-cut materials. The book initially introduces the metal cutting operations, chip formation mechanism, cutting tool materials, and different difficult-to-cut materials so as to familiarize the reader with the terminology regarding the metal cutting operation in the subsequent sections. Furthermore, the book speaks about various machining challenges and difficulties taking into account the machining of materials like nickel-based superalloys and hardened steels which are considered difficult to cut.

Most solar cells currently in commercial use are p-type solar cells, due to their historically lower cost and ease of manufacture compared to n-type solar cells. However, due to improved manufacturing technology and falling cost in general, the cost difference between the two types has shrunk, making n-type solar cells an attractive option for future commercial high-efficiency solar cells. n-type solar cells are less prone to light-induced degradation, and are also less affected by iron impurities. This makes n-type solar cells more efficient compared to their p-type counterparts, with efficiencies of up to 25% being feasible in production. Challenges in the manufacturing process and regarding degradation still remain to be solved, in order to realise n-type solar cells' full potential. The challenges, solutions and opportunities afforded by n-type solar cells are explored in this volume.

This book proposes a conceptual framework for understanding measurement across a broad range of scientific fields and areas of application, such as physics, engineering, education, and psychology. It addresses contemporary issues and controversies within measurement in light of the framework, including operationalism, definitional uncertainty, and the relations between measurement and computation, and describes how the framework, operating as a shared concept system, supports understanding measurement’s work in different domains, using examples in the physical and human sciences. This revised and expanded second edition features a new analysis of the analogies and the differences between the error/uncertainty-related approach adopted in physical measurement and the validity-related approach adopted in psychosocial measurement. In addition, it provides a better analysis and presentation of measurement scales, in particular about their relations with quantity units, and introduces the measurand identification/definition as a part of the "Hexagon Framework" along with new examples from the physical and psychosocial sciences. Researchers and academics across a wide range of disciplines including biological, physical, social, and behavioral scientists, as well as specialists in measurement and philosophy appreciate the work’s fresh and provocative approach to the field at a time when sound measurements of complex scientific systems are increasingly essential to solving critical global problems.

Within a unified switched-control framework, this book investigates the high-performance control designs and theoretic analyses for teleoperation systems, including the joint space and task space teleoperations, the homogeneous and heterogeneous teleoperations, and the single-master single-slave and multi-master multi-slave teleoperations. The book begins with an introduction to the concepts and challenges of networked teleoperation systems. Then, it investigates a new adaptive control framework based on auxiliary switched filters for the bilateral teleoperation systems to handle the model uncertainty and non-passive external forces. To overcome the input constraints of robotic systems, this adaptive method is also extended to the anti-windup adaptive control case. Furthermore, to apply to multi-robot remote collaboration scenarios and heterogeneous teleoperations, two tele-coordination methods and an adaptive semi-autonomous control method are respectively developed. This title will be an essential reference for researchers and engineers interested in teleoperation, robotic systems, and nonlinear control systems. It would also prove useful to graduate students in the fields of science, engineering, and Computer Science. Readers of our book are assumed to have some background in robot control and nonlinear control.

Optimal Inspection Models With Their ApplicationsНазвание: Optimal Inspection Models With Their Applications

Издательство: Springer
Серия: Springer Series in Reliability Engineering
Год: 2023
Страниц: 266
Язык: английский

Размер: 21.3 MB

Discusses how to optimize inspection, maintenance, and cumulative damage models. This book surveys recent applications of inspection models, maintenance models and cumulative damage models, as well as discusses the policies involved with these models. It explains how a stochastic approach can be applied to systems using real-world examples. The book begins by introducing and summarizing standard inspection models. It dedicates chapters to random inspection models and general inspection models, before moving on to discuss inspection policies and checkpoint models. The book discusses inspection of reliability systems, such as missile maintenance systems, as well as Markov models of inspection. The book concludes with a summary of other inspection models, problems they face, and solutions to these problems. Each chapter utilizes examples to illustrate the various models, methods, and policies. Inspections are needed greatly for everything with high reliability. Today, hard-time maintenances rarely apply to new products to avoid high operation cost. On the other hand, condition monitoring maintenances are widely applied to most systems, and their system status can be judged from inspection results and minimum necessary maintenances can be performed.
