In the 20th century, mankind accomplished amazing feats of invention and engineering. Thе automobile, the airplane, the telephone, radio, television, satellites, nuclear energy, cell phones and the Internet, all were invented and made commercially available in just 100 short years. In that time, the average person went from living a life of hard labor and few amenities to one of comfort, free time, easy travel and luxury. These are accomplishments to be proud of. Technology has freed millions of people from lives of toil and allowed them to enjoy a life only the wealthiest individuals could live a century ago.
Of course, those higher standards of living have come at a cost. Increased income and new devices, along with a booming population, have led to a massive increase in energy consumption. The overall intent of the book is to examine what can be done in both developed and developing economies to increase the energy efficiency of electricity generation and consumption with the ultimate aim of reducing and eventually eliminating demand growth - when and where it makes sense to do so, is feasible, and economically cost-justified.
