This book is designed as a software-based lab book to complement a standard textbook in a Mechanics of Material course, which is usually taught in junior undergraduate years. As a secondary function, this book also can be used as an auxiliary workbook in a CAE or Finite Element Analysis course for undergraduate students.
There are 14 chapters in this book. Each chapter is designed as one week's workload, consisting of 2 to 3 sections. Each section is designed for a student to follow the exact steps in that section and learn a concept or topic of Mechanics of Materials. Typically, each section takes 15-40 minutes to complete the exercises.
How I Use This Book in My Classroom

This is how I proceed in my classroom. Each week, I assign a chapter to my students, without offering any lecture about the chapter. I also set up a discussion forum on an e-learning system maintained by the university. After completing the exercises of the chapter, the students are required to discuss them in the forum. In the discussion forum, the students may post their questions, help or answer other students' questions, or share their comments. In addition to taking part in the discussion, I rate each posted article with 1-5 stars. The sum of the ratings becomes the grade of a student's performance for that week.
Most of the students were willing to spend time working on these step-by-step exercises, because these exercises are tangible, rather than abstract Students of this generation are usually better at picking up knowledge through tangible software exercises rather than abstract lecturing. Furthermore, the students not only feel comfortable to post questions in the forum but also enjoy helping other students or sharing their comments with others. Due to students' enthusiastic responses, I'm optimistic about the paradigm shown in Figure 2.
I'm eager to share my teaching experiences here because I think this might be a good course model for a workbook like this one.
