This book introduces some fundamentals of information and communication technology (ICT) and other current and future technologies that are relevant to the field of cybersecurity. In a digitally connected world, cybersecurity is one of the most important issues today. We have witnessed tremendous advancements over the last two decades in various fields of networking, connectivity, electronics, and the technologies that make use of those platforms and devices. Many emerging technologies are also showing promise for future use in the cybersecurity area. Hence, it is important to understand some basics of the technologies and concepts that are making their impacts today and those which may show stronger influence in the near future. The book begins with an introduction to ICT and its advancements, then talks about Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Blockchain Technologies. It then goes on to cover wireless technology, Internet of Things (IoT), Distributed Cloud Computing, Quantum Computing, Virtual Reality, and other futuristic technologies that would be directly related to Cyberspace and Cybersecurity.

Information and Communication Technology, precisely referred to as ICT, is a wider umbrella term that covers different types of technologies—both hardware and software technologies—associated with the communication systems, techniques, transmission media, software programs, protocols, sensors, and standards. The most common examples of ICT technologies include all modern automated systems powered by modern computers, storage devices, transmission media, software platforms, and other related elements including web-based data1 and voice communication systems, integrated and embedded systems, Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Internet, and many others.

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Network of Networks (i.e., Internet), and Internet of Things (IoT) are a few crucial domains of ICT that are growing very fast and changing the landscapes of all types of businesses, processes, infrastructures, industries, and societies across the globe tremendously. CPS is a wide range of modern systems that have revolutionized numerous industries such as energy grids, civic systems, healthcare, industrial automation, self-driven automobiles, robotics, home automation and many others. A CPS system is a computer-based system whose core mechanism of operation and function is monitored and controlled by computer programs, commonly referred to as software algorithms or applications and integrated through communication networks for effective coordination and communication among the ICT elements.

Machine Learning, precisely referred to as ML, is a sub-domain of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. Artificial Intelligence is a large field dealing with the computer science and mathematics for materializing numerous solutions to the problems through machine intelligence or machine’s capabilities to deal with the problems like the human-being does. Thus, Machine Learning is also a field that deals with computer science, mathematical analysis, mostly statistics, and data science/analytics. The power of Machine Learning technologies improved significantly with the advent of modern computer programming or software development. Thus, Machine Learning can be defined as:A branch of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that uses the structured/unstructured raw data and mathematical algorithms powered by the software programs, which enable the machines to imitate the ways humans learn from the real-world environment and improve accuracy with the increased experience with the real-world data without being explicitly programmed through computer instructions to do so.

This textbook is written in a step-by-step manner, with easily accessible information for both general readers and experts in the field. It is suitable to be used as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses like Computer Networks and Security, Information Security, etc.
