The smart building realization is progressing with the advancements on the Internet of Things (IoT). There are thousands of devices connected in the building, which interact with each other and to the servers; the base of the IoT lies in the data collection from all the devices, which process the data collected, analysis, and feedback after the analysis. The amount of data traffc generated is massive in TBs, which frst needs to be transported to the distant cloud or servers in real time for storage along with ultra-high-speed computation. The solution is building-integrated data center, which can increase the effciency and reduce the burden on the server. Smart Building Data Center (SBDC) has a capacity to provide superior connectivity and low network congestion with savings in energy and capital.

An Internet of Things (IoT)-based data collection platform for smart buildings is developed. A two-bus DC network is initially chosen as a test system. Fault analysis is used to analyze the normal and fault currents at the different buses. A hardware prototype is realized for a scaled-down version of the above network and IoT is incorporated through Arduino microcontroller and Node MCU (ESP8266) to collect the various data like current values, temperature, and humidity values and to visualize these data on the IoT-based Thing Speak platform. The temperature and humidity parameters are collected for a bus located at some remote location where human intervention is not possible and the corresponding relay is tripped whenever there is any abnormality in the temperature or humidity values. Three relays are used to implement manual control over the three loads from the HTML page. The concept of this small two-bus network is extended to a larger distribution network like 21 or 52 bus network using “Zonalized Data Collection”.
