Understanding IP addresses, how they function and how to subnet them is the first real network engineering skill that most of us learn. It is also the first big challenge we face in our education as engineers, because while the math itself is easy, the concepts of subnetting can at times appear to be somewhat abstract.

And yet ironically, because it is the first skill we learn, subnetting is often regarded as being an "entry level" skill, troublesome to learn, and less important than routing protocols, device configuration, or network architecture.
