A basic self-instructional manual that will enable students to defend themselves against most physical attacks.

The book is designed for those who have no previous training in the martial arts; formal karate techniques are explained where necessary to clarify points of instruction. Physical fitness and mental discipline are emphasized, and the interested student can enjoy numerous physical conditioning exercises before he embarks upon the twelve step-by-step lessons of basic self-defense techniques. In addition, Hidy Ochiai explains the basic methods of falling and the main pressure points and how to use them in case of an attack. The Essence of Self-Defense, liberally illustrated with photos of the author in action, is an outstanding introduction to the art of self-defense by the world's principal teacher of the martial arts, and is widely used as a textbook in colleges, karate schools, and other institutions.

This book is intended to help those persons who wish to study self-defense but do not have the proper opportunity elsewhere. If that applies to you, then this book is written for you. Of course, this book is also designed to be a suitable text for classroom (or gymnasium) instruction in the art of self-defense. If possible, a student should take instruction under a qualified teacher in order to more fully understand and digest the explanations in the text. The basic self-defense techniques presented here are not overly complicated, but they can be quite difficult to master, depending on the level of proficiency you wish to pursue. However, these basic techniques are more easily digested and understood than the broad range of physical and mental concepts involved in the eformal study of the traditional martial arts. Since my primary intention is to make the text easily approached and understood by those with no previous martial arts training, I have deliberately avoided making it too technical. Many of the self-defense techniques must be explained in the terms of basic karate or other martial arts in order to teach them in an orderly and effective manner; so, when formal karate techniques are needed, they are explained and taught in this book. However, to prevent possible confusion, I have not used any of the technical terms from the original language of karate; all terms are translated into English. Although the techniques covered are fundamental ones, they have numerous applications. If you are fortunate enough to have a qualified instructor, he or she will provide you with, and help you to find, many possibilities for applying these techniques. In the case of self-study, you can still discover various applications once you truly understand and practice the lessons.

This book is purposely divided into twelve lessons. Many so-called minicourses in self-defense are offered in one-, two-, or three-month units, with the students meeting once or twice per week for four-, eight-, or twelve-week periods. In such cases, the instructor should adjust the scope of each lesson as needed, or cover only a portion of the lesson in class and have the students cover the remaining portions on their own. The division of the text makes such adjustments very easy to design.

If you are about to study these lessons on your own, you are strongly advised to follow them step by step because the lessons are, in most cases, progressive in nature. You may spend one hour or one week on each lesson; then, when you have gone through the entire book you might come back to the first lesson and review all the lessons. You might choose to spend a lot of time mastering each individual technique before going on to the next one.

Hidy Ochiai is a seventh-dan head of Washin-ryu karate in the United States, Canada, and Europe. He also holds a black belt in judo and an instructor's certificate in kendo. He has won numerous tournaments and championships and runs one of the largest and most highly rated karate schools in the world in Vestal, New York. Hidy Ochiai was inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame in 1979 as Instructor of the Year; and again, in 1980 as Man of the Year—one of the fewer than ten people in the world to have received this double honor.
