Название: A Student's Guide to Psychology (Isi Guides to the Major Disciplines)
Автор: Daniel N. Robinson
Издательство: Intercollegiate Studies Institute
Год: 2002
Формат: pdf
Страниц: 75
Размер: 1 MB
Язык: English

A small book to introduce anyone to psychology. I enjoyed this read. The author gave 2 sides to the major arguments and clearly showed an outline of many of the major players in the world of psychology, and philosophy for that matter. I think its also important to note that he gave a bit of a history to many of them too, just to show where they came from and why they might have such a view. I think this is important, in that we should also look critically at where we are at in psychology today. This book is very clear and to the point, as it should be for such a small book!

Название: Moral Realities: An Essay in Philosophical Psychology
Автор: Mark Platts
Издательство: Routledge
Год: 1991
Формат: pdf
Страниц: 179
Размер: 1 MB
Язык: English

Moral Realities engages the classical moral philosophies of Hume, Mandeville and Nietzsche, and tackles the powerful arguments of the contemporary moral relativists. Platts uses an existing critique of philosophical notions of desire and value to present a descriptive metaphysics of morals--clarifying both what morality is and what it is not. He also employs a classification of desire that articulates a general theory of value and valuing which is distinguished by a cognitive approach given to certain kinds of moral valuing. The possibility of applying this approach to moral valuings is defended against the persuasive criticisms of both the Humean subjectivist and the contemporary moral relativist.

In his critical history of American social psychology, John Greenwood reviews the original conception of the social dimensions of cognition, emotion and behavior, and of the discipline of social psychology itself, as embraced by early twentieth century American social psychologists. He documents how the once broadly defined conception of social psychological phenomena came to be progressively neglected as the century developed, till hardly any trace of the original conception of the "social" remains in contemporary American psychology.

Название: The Serpent and the Dove: Celibacy in Literature and Life (Psychology, Religion, and Spirituality)
Автор: A. W. Richard Sipe
Издательство: Praeger
Год: 2007
Формат: pdf
Страниц: 290
Размер: 2 MB
Язык: English

Richard Sipe, himself a former monk and priest, has made a lifelong venture of determining the reality and meaning of religious celibacy. Even an adequate operational definition of religious celibacy, he says, has been avoided by Catholic hierarchy and scholars to preserve the celibate myth. Having spent 25 years conducting a study of celibacy and sexual behavior in Roman Catholic priests, Sipe concluded that at any one time no more than 50 percent of priests were practicing celibacy. To more fully understand what celibacy is, how it is practiced, the affect it has on the humanness of men of women, and the social effects it presents, Sipe says we can use the approach presented in this book.

Название: Simulating Minds: The Philosophy, Psychology, and Neuroscience of Mindreading
Автор: Alvin I. Goldman
Издательство: Oxford University Press, USA
Год: 2006
Формат: pdf
Страниц: 377
Размер: 4 MB
Язык: English

In «Simulating Minds», his ninth and latest book, Alvin Goldman provides a comprehensive survey of the principal theories devised to explain the mind's ability to ascribe mental states to other minds as well as to itself. Minds --human and to all appearances those of other intelligent fellow creatures-- possess the capability not only of having mental states (things such as notions, emotions and sensations) but of conceiving that other individuals or organisms are equally capable of having their own mental states. This more complex, second-order activity is referred to in psychology as mentalizing or mindreading.

Название: Social Psychology of the Workplace, Volume 23
Автор: THYE S. R., LAWLER E. J.
Издательство: Emerald Group Publishing Limited
Год: 2006
Формат: pdf
Страниц: 306
Размер: 2 MB
Язык: English

Advances in Group Processes publishes theoretical analyses, reviews and theory based empirical chapters on group phenomena. Volume 23 includes papers that address fundamental issues relating to the Social Psychology of the Workplace. Chapter one uses a social identity perspective to understand the emergence of social capital and cooperative behavior in the workplace. The second and third chapters address issues of leadership. Chapter two reviews the social psychological literature on leadership, and contrasts this with leadership literatures which tend to be more applied (and positive) in nature. The third chapter offers a new theory of leadership that centers on the importance of leadership vision and self-sacrifice. As a group, these chapters address new empirical and theoretical problems at the cutting edge of workplace research.
