Spreadsheet Problem Solving and Programming for Engineers and Scientists provides a comprehensive resource essential to a full understanding of modern spreadsheet skills needed for engineering and scientific computations.

Beginning with the basics of spreadsheets and programming, this book builds on the authors’ decades of experience teaching spreadsheets and programming to both university students and professional engineers and scientists. Following on from this, it covers engineering economics, key numerical methods, and applied statistics. Finally, this book details the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming system that accompanies Excel.

Chapters 9 and 10 introduced VBA Subs and Functions without getting too involved with the details of the VBA programming language. In the Chapter 11, we will delve into those details. This will expand your ability to create VBA programs to tackle more complicated tasks. This chapter should also serve as a useful reference as you develop VBA applications in the future.

In contrast to other programming languages, VBA has a large family of data types, different modes for storing numerical and other information. Data structures include single variables and arrays, including one- and two-dimensional. For engineering and scientific applications, we do not commonly use all the data types, but they are part of the overall VBA environment, and we will introduce them here. We have shown examples of VBA objects, properties, and methods in previous chapters, and we will expand that knowledge here. The concept of variable scope is essential to creating larger VBA codes with multiple modules, Subs, and Functions. You will learn about scope here and how to take advantage of it.

The ability to implement decisions and iteration in VBA program code is essential. The topics of selection and repetition introduce the fundamental VBA structures that facilitate this. We will provide both examples and guidance in the use of these. Later in this chapter, you will see how these structures are put to work. To this point, we have used Subs as macros and user-defined functions to be invoked from the Excel environment. In this chapter, we will introduce modular programming where these are called from other routines within VBA.

With each chapter including examples and a set of exercises, this book is an ideal companion for all engineering courses and also for self-study. Based on the latest version of Excel (Microsoft Excel for Microsoft 365), it is also compatible with earlier versions of Excel dating back to Version 2013. Including numerous case studies, this book will be of interest to students and professionals working in all areas of engineering and science.
