Let's use Ruby to automatically get feedback as early as possible. Whether running automated tests or creating image files from raw data, Ruby can be used to automate these tasks. Furthermore, it can also be used to automate running tasks whenever a file changes. Does that sound like a good idea? Then this book is for you. The book describes various ways of getting feedback — and fast feedback — using Ruby tools, such as plain Ruby scripts and Rake tasks. It also shows a way to automatically execute these tools, using Guard.

Who is this book for?

I wrote this book for people who already know some Ruby and who like to discover ways to create more value faster, by means of getting…

- some feedback,
- with less manual work, and
- as soon as possible.

For example, this book is for you,
- if you’re a programming tester and want to learn about how to automatically run code that provides the feedback you seek, or
- if you’re a programmer and want to learn about ways to run automated tests as early as possible: Right after saving newly written code to disk.

Assumptions:
I assume you’ve read technical books before – maybe a book about Ruby – so I won’t bother you with details about font usage and formatting. I also assume that you have some experience in Ruby. You don’t need expert knowledge, but you should be able to read and understand Ruby code. You will get much more out of this book if you have also written Ruby code before. This is not a book to teach Ruby – although you may learn something new about the language. In this book we’ll look at libraries that are written in Ruby and that help to get faster feedback. These tools can be used in projects that are implemented in Ruby, but that’s not necessary: While writing this book1, I used a Ruby script to check for the existence of files which are referenced in the text and included inline, such as the code examples. Also, instead of presenting boring (and likely not up-to-date) details of available command line parameters and detailed usage information, I will give tips about how to find the detailed information you may need2. Be sure to follow the links in the book and check the home pages of the Ruby gems used.
