The C programming language remains a preferred choice for developing high performance, embedded systems. For students without any programming experience, learning to use the C programming language can be challenging. The book series provides a practical step-by-step approach to systematically understand and apply the basics of the language. In particular, it aligns with first year engineering courses such as APSC 160 at The University of British Columbia (Point Grey campus). Volume I consists of five chapters: Where to Start?, Fundamentals, Branch Control Statements, Loop Control Statements, and File Input/Output.

The C programming language remains a preferred choice for high performance embedded systems. However, for students with no programming experience, learning to use the language can be challenging. This book series has been developed for novice programmers; it consists of three volumes. Volume II builds on the topics covered in Volume I. It introduces programmer defined functions, arrays (1D, 2D), and strings (array of type char).

Volume III covers the fundamentals of data acquisition systems (DAQs).

In their studies, students learn how to frame and solve problems using algebra, arithmetic, calculus, set theory, trigonometry, and so on. They perform computations using calculators or by hand, which works well for a small number of computations. However, manual ly performing a
large number of these computations (e.g., 50,000) is time consuming and prone to error. As an alternative, we can develop a program to correctly perform the calculation and run it over and over again.

Programs can acquire inputs, perform calculations, and output results. They are written in a programming language and stored in files ; each language has a defined syntax (i.e., grammar). A wide variety of languages are available such as assembly, C, C++, Java, MATLAB, Python, etc. This course uses the C pro gramming language. It is a well-established language that remains in use, especially for real-time embedded systems that require fast execution and have limited memory resources.
