The world is awash in trade magazines, conference sessions, social media thought leaders, and consultants all of which are offering up the latest and greatest DevOps or Digital Transformation advice. There are some insightful books, practical articles, and other resources with valuable background information or tactical guidance (some are called out by Ben in this book). Finding these resources and distilling them down can be a challenge.

DevOps was an inclusive experience, attempting to bring two traditionally opposed parts of information technology together, development and operations. The most radical idea I drew from the foundations of DevOps is the focus on overall throughput. Organizations tend to watch performance measures tied to individual job roles or steps of a project (local), rather than measuring the indicators of overall organizational performance (global).

As an example in the developer and operations scenario, if we measure and incentivize local performance metrics, we create conflict. Both developers and operations personnel should share the same goal - for the technology solutions to meet the business needs. For technology solutions to meet business needs, we need a stable environment with new features. To create a stable environment, operations personnel want to limit the number of software deployments (changes) into the existing infrastructure. To deliver new features, developers want to increase the number of software deployments.
