Big data has been loosely defined as data that is too large or complex for traditional data processing techniques to be applied effectively. The challenges that arise with such massive data sets include capture, storage, analysis, search, and visualization, to name a few. Within the healthcare domain, the definition of biomedical big data has been expanded to encompass "high volume, high diversity biological, clinical, environmental, and lifestyle information collected from single individuals to large cohorts, in relation to their health and wellness status, at one or several time points."
