A typical Oracle database has multiple users working simultaneously. Data is shared amongst the users, and this of course leads to security concerns. This book comes in from the angle of developing and maintaining a secure Oracle database with multiple users. The book shows how data can be shared in an orderly fashion and what a good secure database is. In this book, we assume that you are acquainted with basic Oracle SQL and fundamentals of relational database.

While a fundamental tenet of database is the sharing of data, the data to be shared must be “good” data. To ensure goodness, we review database design in Chapter 1 to solidify the rationale and process required to reach the third normal form. Chapter 2 reviews constraints to ensure integrity but the focus of the material is still on the single user. In Chapter 3, we begin working as multi-users; we embark on sharing one good database.

This book relies heavily on examples and scenarios and assumes you will do the exercises in each chapter. We will often suggest doing something within Oracle that is not “standard” but rather what we consider “good practice.” Our background includes a heavy dose of software engineering, and our experience influences the way we approach database topics. In dealing with secure multi-user environments, it is imperative to follow practices making the software we write obvious and clear. For example, we try to include meaningful comments in most queries with several lines; we also advocate fully parenthesized expressions for arithmetic and logic clauses.

To deal with multiple users in a secure Oracle database environment, we must define some terms to use in discussing individual responsibilities within the organization and within the database. After reviewing some basic ideas in database, we begin the secure multi-user part with a description of privileges and tablespaces -- what a person with an Oracle account can and cannot do with the database and what data can and cannot be seen. We will create a tablespace and the Data Base Administrator manages it. The secure multi-user part of book begins in earnest in Chapter 3.
