It's not disputed that the Eastern Front was where WWII was lost for Germany. While the 2nd Front in Normandy was certainly the proverbial nail in the coffin, it was the destruction of Army Group Centre in 1944 that sealed the fate of the Wehrmacht and the Nazi state. Adair's book gives a generous treatment to this often overlooked campaign that had such a huge impact on the outcome of WWII.
Over 168 pages Adair charts the progress of the campaign, describing in detail the decision-making processes of both Stalin and Hitler and their respective high commands, the build-up for the campaign and then in excellent detail the actual day-by-day fighting that decided the campaign. Adair's narrative draws from a small but comprehensive bibliography which can certainly serve as a launch pad for deeper research into the campaign.

"Condemned to Live: A Panzer Artilleryman's Five-Front War", is an account by an Austrian draftee of his time in the German Army before, during, and after World War II. The book was co-written by Franz Frisch and Wilbur Jones, Jr. As the book was written more than 50 years after the close of the war, it is much more of a reminiscence of what it was like to serve in the German Army rather than describing actual fighting and campaigning. Mr Frisch served from the beginning of the war till the end, and spent two years in a PoW camp in Italy after the war.

As described in his preserved extract-journal, Abel Tasman had two ships under his command during his memorable voyage to the mysterious 'Southland' in 1642: the yacht 'Heemskerck' and the fluyt 'Zeehaen'. According to historian Peter Sigmond, head of the department of Dutch History of the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum, these ships can be placed in the same rank as ships like the 'Santa Maria', the 'Golden Hind' and the 'Endeavour'. Ab Hoving, head of the restoration department working for Sigmond, built models of these ships. Cor Emke has recorded the entire (experimental) building process on cad drawings. These drawings are not only printed but also recorded on cd-rom. This cd-rom enables the model builder to examine and print each part of the ship in a scale selected by himself. In the book to which the cd-rom belongs, Peter Sigmond describes the historical background of Tasman's expedition. Original illustrations from Tasman's journal, and paintings and pictures of yachts and fluyts illustrate the narrative. The book also offers an analysis of seventeenth-century shipbuilding; an account of how the models were built; a typology of the ships Tasman sailed with and a lot of information from which anyone interested can make his own choice in order to construct his model.

The Scanian War is generally taken to mark the beginning of the decline of Sweden as a Great Power. During the Thirty Years War and the Northern War of 1655-60 (First or Second Northern War in different historical traditions), Sweden had established a Baltic Empire, expelling Denmark from her remaining possessions in the south of modern Sweden (amongst them Scania), and taking control of Pomerania, Wismar and Bremen in northern Germany. This had come at a serious financial cost, and after the peace of 1660 Sweden was looking for a lucrative alliance – during the Thirty Years War much of the cost of the Swedish army had been paid by her allies.

Under the terms of the treaty ending World War I, the German High Seas Fleet was compelled to sail to the Scottish anchorage at Scapa Flow. Before the British could take control of the ships, the German officers scuttled the fleet, sending 16 capital ships and numerous smaller craft to the bottom. From 1924 the German ships were raised and their high-quality metal fittings converted to scrap, in the greatest salvage operation of all time.
