The Royal Regiment of Artillery originated in 1716, when two companies of artillery were formed to ensure that a regular force of gunners was readily available. The peace of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1748 did not end the hostility between the French and British in North America. The French began by inciting the native tribes but it was only in 1756 that war was officially declared.
