In 1922 the US Navy commissioned its first small experimental aircraft carrier. This was followed into service by two much larger and capable carriers in 1927 with five more being built prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor including three large Yorktown class. To take the offensive against the Japanese Navy, the American Congress funded by far the largest carrier building program in history based on the Essex class, a larger version of the pre-war Yorktown vessels. Of the twenty-six ordered, fourteen were commissioned in time to see Second World War service. These were joined by many smaller classes of carriers, including light carriers and escort carriers. Post-war ever larger and more capable carriers were commissioned. Since 1975, when the first of a fleet of ten nuclear-powered Nimitz class carriers was commissioned, they have epitomized United States superpower status and worldwide power projection. These are due to be replaced in the decades to come with the even more sophisticated nuclear-powered Gerald R. Ford class. When the United States finally entered World War I, American artists and illustrators were commissioned to paint and draw it. These artists’ commissions, however, were as captains for their patron: the U.S. Army. The eight men—William J. Aylward, Walter J. Duncan, Harvey T. Dunn, George M. Harding, Wallace Morgan, Ernest C. Peixotto, J. Andre Smith, and Harry E. Townsent—arrived in France early in 1918 with the American Expeditionary forces (AEF). Owing to the heavy casualties suffered by the carabiniers in the 1809 campaign, the Emperor decreed that they should be armoured to the same advantage as the cuirassiers. In this way the two corps drew together in being the only troops of the Grande Arme? who were armoured, while at the same time they diverged in breaking away from their traditionally similar dress. Emir Bukhari does a splendid job of examining the uniforms and equipment of Napoleon's cuirassiers and carabiniers, in a text complemented throughout by numerous illustrations and diagrams including eight full page colour plates by the ever popular Angus McBride.

ТБ-1 имел схему свободнонесущего моноплана с крылом высокого профиля, обладал большой грузоподъемностью и сравнительно высокой скоростью, хорошей устойчивостью на всех режима полета и простой техникой пилотирования. В эксплуатации самолет ТБ-1 зарекомендовал себя простым, надежным и неприхотливым самолетом. Кроме сухопутного варианта выпускался также поплавковый вариант ТБ-1П. В СССР это был первый опыт постановки на поплавки столь крупного самолета. В 1929 году на самолете АНТ-4 "Страна Советов" экипаж летчика С.А. Шестакова совершил выдающийся перелет по маршруту Москва - Нью-Йорк общей протяженностью 21242 км. На АНТ-4 летчик А.В. Ляпидявский совершил посадку на льдину, где находился экипаж затонувшего парохода "Челюскин" и вывез на материк часть людей. Снятые с вооружения, ТБ-1 еще долго использовались в качестве транспортных самолетов. Производство ТБ-1 закончилось в 1932 году. Всего было построено 217 самолетов этого типа.
