Флавий Арриан рассматривает греко-македонское военное дело: рода войск, боевые строи, вооружение и маневры, а в "Диспозиции против аланов" Арриан, бывший тогда губернатором римской провинции Каппадокия (Малая Азия), описывает кампанию против вторгшихся в римские пределы в 135 г. н. э. аланов.
