Imagination, sensual delight, a sharp wit—these qualities were enormously prized in sixteenth-century Ferrara, where one of the most cultured and powerful courts of the High Renaissance held sway. Dosso Dossi was the idiosyncratic, brilliant painter most responsible for turning those values into a glorious artistic reality. Dosso's rich color schemes are akin to those of his fellow North Italian Titian; he learned something about innovative composition from Raphael and about the force of the body from Michelangelo. But his paintings have a very individual appeal. In leafy natural surroundings containing an array of animals and heavenly bodies, events unfold that are often enigmatic, enacted by characters whose interrelationships elude definition. Published 50 years after Christian Dior's "New Look" of 1947, and accompanying an exhibition at The Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, this book presents a chronology of Dior's creations. In 711 an army of Arabs and Berbers from North Africa, united by their faith in Islam, crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and arrived on the Iberian Peninsula. In less than a decade the Muslims brought most of the peninsula under their domination; they called the Iberian lands they controlled al-Andalus. Although the borders of al-Andalus shifted over the centuries, the Muslims remained a powerful force on the peninsula for almost eight hundred years, until 1492, when they were expelled by Ferdinand and Isabella. This volume, which accompanies a major exhibition presented at the Alhambra in Granada and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is devoted to the little-known artistic legacy of Islamic Spain. From 711 to 1492 al-Andalus was the occidental frontier of Islam. Floating on the western edge of the Mediterranean, cut off from the European continent by jagged mountains, it was geographically isolated from both North Africa and Europe, from Islamic as well as Christian lands. Physical remoteness gave al-Andalus a privileged place in medieval myths but also separated it from the communities of the east and the west, so that it received only sporadic attention from both worlds. Although a small group of scholars pursued the serious study of the arts of Islamic Spain, these arts have for the most part been viewed as brilliant and exotic vestiges of a lost culture, as objects and monuments that left no mark on European tradition.

Литаврин Геннадий Григорьевич (6 сентября 1925, с. Абай Уймонского аймака Ойротской автономной области Сибирского края — 6 ноября 2009, Москва) — российский историк, специалист по средневековой истории южных славян, Византии и русско-византийских связей, академик РАН (1994). Выпускник кафедры истории Средних веков исторического факультета МГУ (1951), ученик З. В. Удальцовой. Преподавал древние языки на историческом факультете МГУ (1954—1955), был сотрудником Института истории АН СССР (1955—1968).
С 1968 года работал в Институте славяноведения РАН, в 1983—2002 годах заведовал отделом истории Средних веков. С 1987 года возглавлял сектор истории Византии (позже — Центр по изучению византийской цивилизации) Института всеобщей истории РАН и редакцию журнала «Византийский временник». Доктор исторических наук (1973). Академик РАН (1994, член-корреспондент АН СССР с 1987), иностранный член Болгарской АН (1989). Президент Национального комитета византинистов России, вице-президент Международной ассоциации византинистов. Лауреат Государственной премии России в области науки и техники (1996).
