Монография посвящена исследованию орнамента финноязычных народов Северо-Запада России - саамов Кольского полуострова, вепсов и карел. Автором на основе изучения большого числа источников (вышивка, резьба и роспись по дереву, меховая мозаика, узоры на кожаных изделиях и т. д.) разработана подробная типовая классификация орнаментированных вещей и собственно орнаментов, которая изложена на фоне сравнительного анализа с искусством других народов европейской России и Сибири. Автор выделяет две зоны художественных традиций: искусство саамов, стилистически тяготеющее к искусству народов Сибири, и более южную зону карел и вепсов, орнаменты которых обнаруживают большое сходство с искусством соседних земледельческих народов, особенно русских Европейского Севера.
