Чтобы успешно охотиться с какой бы то ни было породой собак, необходимы два непременных условия: во-первых, каждая охотничья собака должна обладать прирожденными качествами, дающими возможность добывать с ней птицу или зверя, и, во-вторых, самому охотнику приходится применять труд и прилежание, направленные к развитию этих качеств.
Что касается прирожденных качеств собаки, то путем правильного ведения породы — подбора производителей по внешнему виду, по кровям и по внутренним качествам, развитие в собаке наибольших способностей достигается человеком, так сказать, без прямого воздействия на нее, но этого недостаточно для того, чтобы собака стала его помощником на охоте. Ей надо дать понять, для чего она создана, и как она должна исполнять свои обязанности.
Для осуществления этой цели охотниками выработаны известные приемы, которые в общем называются у охотников с легавой "натаской", у охотников же с гончей "наганиванием" или "нагонкой".
