Название: Cooperative Threat Reduction, Missile Defense, and the Nuclear Future
Автор: Michael Krepon
Издательство: Palgrave Macmillan
Год: 2002
Формат: pdf
Страниц: 307
Размер: 5 MB
Язык: English

In this book, Michael Krepon analyzes nuclear issues such as missile defenses, space warfare, and treaties, and argues that the United States is on a dangerous course. During the Cold War, Mutual Assured Destruction, or MAD, facilitated strategic arms control. Now that the Cold War has been replaced by asymmetric warfare, treaties based on nuclear overkill and national vulnerability are outdated and must be adapted to a far different world. A new strategic concept of Cooperative Threat Reduction is needed to replace MAD. A balance is needed that combines military might with strengthened treaty regimes.

Название: The Social Sciences in Modern Japan: The Marxian and Modernist Traditions
Автор: Andrew E. Barshay
Издательство: University of California Press
Год: 2007
Формат: pdf
Страниц: 348
Размер: 5 MB
Язык: English

This incisive intellectual history of Japanese social science from the 1890s to the present day considers the various forms of modernity that the processes of ''development'' or ''rationalization'' have engendered and the role social scientists have played in their emergence. Andrew E. Barshay argues that Japan, together with Germany and pre-revolutionary Russia, represented forms of developmental alienation from the Atlantic Rim symptomatic of late-emerging empires. Neither members nor colonies of the Atlantic Rim, these were independent national societies whose cultural self-image was nevertheless marked by a sense of difference. Barshay presents a historical overview of major Japanese trends and treats two of the most powerful streams of Japanese social science, one associated with Marxism, the other with Modernism (kindaishugi), whose most representative figure is the late Maruyama Masao. Demonstrating that a sense of developmental alienation shaped the thinking of social scientists in both streams, the author argues that they provided Japanese social science with moments of shared self-understanding.

Название: National Identity and Globalization: Youth, State, and Society in Post-Soviet Eurasia
Автор: Douglas W. Blum
Издательство: Cambridge University Press
Год: 2007
Формат: pdf
Страниц: 236
Размер: 5 MB
Язык: English

Is globalization in danger of diluting national identities and 'transnationalizing' cultures? How can societies attempt to manage globalization and become developed while maintaining a viable national identity? In a study of three globalizing states and cities in post-Soviet Eurasia - Russia (Astrakhan), Kazakhstan (Almaty), and Azerbaijan (Baku) - Douglas W. Blum provides an empirical examination of national identity formation, exploring how cultures, particularly youth cultures, have been affected by global forces. Blum argues that social discourse regarding youth cultural trends - coupled with official and non-official approaches to youth policy - complement patterns of state-society relations and modes of response to globalization. His findings show that the nations studied have embraced certain aspects of modernity and liberalism, while rejecting others, but have also reasserted the place of national traditions.

Название: Transcultural Bodies: Female Genital Cutting in Global Context
Автор: Ylva Hernlund, Ylva Hernlund, Bettina Shell-Duncan
Издательство: Rutgers University Press
Год: 2007
Формат: pdf
Страниц: 387
Размер: 5 MB
Язык: English

Female ''circumcision'' or, more precisely, female genital cutting (FGC), remains an important cultural practice in many African countries, often serving as a coming-of-age ritual. It is also a practice that has generated international dispute and continues to be at the center of debates over women's rights, the limits of cultural pluralism, the balance of power between local cultures, international human rights, and feminist activism. In our increasingly globalized world, these practices have also begun immigrating to other nations, where transnational complexities vex debates about how to resolve the issue. Bringing together thirteen essays, ''Transcultural Bodies'' provides an ethnographically rich exploration of FGC among African diasporas in the United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia. The contributors analyze changes in ideologies of gender and sexuality in immigrant communities, the frequent marginalization of African women's voices in debates over FGC, and controversies over legislation restricting the practice in immigrant populations.

Название: After the White House: Former Presidents as Private Citizens
Автор: Max J. Skidmore
Издательство: Palgrave Macmillan
Год: 2004
Формат: pdf
Страниц: 207
Размер: 5 MB
Язык: English

hat do you do with yourself after holding the most powerful office in the world? A relatively young man, Bill Clinton probably has many years to come up with his own answers to this question. After the White House is the first book to take a systematic look at the post-presidential careers of Clinton and his prede-cessors. Thirty-two completed their terms. Four became presidential candidates again (one was even elected), two served in Congress, one accepted election to the Confederate Congress, and one became Chief Justice. Clinton has the unique distinction of his first lady becoming a United States senator. Jefferson created the University of Virginia. Teddy Roosevelt embarked on an African safari upon leaving office. Many remained influential figures; others were ostracized when political rivals succeeded them (like Hoover during FDR's terms). Rich with anecdotes, After the White House provides an entertaining and unique per-spec-tive on the lives of presidents.

Название: Political Development
Автор: Damien Kingsbury
Издательство: Routledge
Год: 2007
Формат: pdf
Страниц: 248
Размер: 5 MB
Язык: English

This book fills a growing gap in the literature on international development by addressing the debates about good governance and institution-building within the context of political development. Political Development returns the key issues of human rights and democratization to the centre of the development debate and offers the reader an alternative to the conventional approach to, and definition of, the idea of development’. Discussing political development in its broadest context, it includes chapters on democracy, institution-building, the state, state failure, nation, human rights and political violence. Damien Kingsbury, a leading expert on development and Southeast Asia, argues that good governance’, in its common usage, is too narrowly defined and that good governance is not just about ensuring the integrity of a state’s financial arrangements, but that it goes to the core social and political issues of transparency and accountability, implying a range of social structures defined as institutions’. Providing new insights into political development, this comprehensive text can be used on advanced undergraduate and postgraduate courses in international development, comparative politics, political theory and international relations.
