John Macquarrie was born in Scotland in 1919. The recipient of many honorary degrees, he holds two doctorates, one in philosophy and the other in letters, from Glasgow University. His distinguished teaching career, begun in 1953. has included posts at the University of Glasgow and at Union Theological Seminary in New York. He is currently Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity at Oxford.
Among his many important interpretations of contemporary thought are An Existentialist Theology, The Scope of Demythologizing, Principles of Christian Theology, God-Talk, and Three Issues in Ethics. Professor Macquarrie is also co-translator, with Edward Robinson, of one of the century's key philo-
sophical works, Heidegger's Sein und Zeit.
