The Military Metaverse explores the impact that the Metaverse is having today on how the world's militaries procure, maintain, train, plan and fight, and how the Metaverse presents new challenges and opportunities for future conflict.

The military were early adopters of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality technologies and wider simulation systems. Before 2010 they were one of the few sectors that could afford the technology, and millions of military R&D dollars went into developing and understanding these technologies. However, as the democratisation of metaverse technologies has happened over the past decade there is a danger that militaries have been overtaken and caught short, encumbered with expensive legacy systems, sold and maintained by expensive prime contractors, whilst the gaming and consumer market has cheaper and more innovative and agile systems. The book provides a history of the use of metaverse technologies in the military, particularly in the areas of design, maintenance, training, planning and operations. It then examines the current state of the art in these areas and the opportunities that are available from the current generation of consumer-driven approaches. The drivers for, challenges to, and paths towards an enterprise approach to the Military Metaverse are then presented. The book explores the military use of social virtual worlds, of early work done by defence and security organisations in worlds such as Second Life, and how such environments could become important for intelligence as well as influence operations in the future. Finally, the book will consider what war in the Metaverse might look like, both in terms on in-world activities and the impact of cyber-war on the Metaverse itself.

Metaverse is оne or more interactive, interconnected, 3D digital spaces, existing in virtual and physical space, and populated by a large number of users, human and AI, who can interact for collaboration, work or play, have agency and which has persistence, and which may be accessed through a range of technologies including VR, MR and possibly AR. A potentially even broader definition of the Metaverse sees its role as to embed computing into the real world and to embed the real world into computing. When we use Metaverse (and military Metaverse) in lowercase, it implies a more limited space or application, and when capitalised, it implies a future, all-encompassing 3D digital and digital/physical space where people almost cease to distinguish between physical and digital activities.

Chapters 1 and 2 of this book look at the history of using Metaverse technologies in the military. The key message is that these are not new technologies or approaches for the military. Chapter 3 looks at the building blocks of a military Metaverse, and the underlying technologies that drive it, including the role of Artificial Intelligence, as well as the psychological and human factors considerations in the use of such spaces. Chapters 4 to 8 then look at how the Metaverse can be used within different aspects of the military life cycle, from capability acquisition and support (Chapter 4), through training at both the individual and collective levels (Chapters 5 and 6), and then the role of the Metaverse in supporting analysis and planning (Chapter 7) and operations (Chapter 8).

The final three chapters take a slightly broader and increasingly futuristic perspective. Chapter 9 looks at what social virtual worlds might be able to offer the military Metaverse – and how they have already been the setting for both military experimentation and grey-zone operations. Chapter 10 considers what a well-developed enterprise military Metaverse might actually be like, and what it could offer the military through a unified and holistic approach to the technology. Finally, Chapter 11 considers what a war in the wider Metaverse could mean, and how it might impact on the more physical, cyber, and multi-domain operations that militaries are more accustomed to.

It should be of interest to all militaries across the world, the industries that support them, and those in academia and the wider public with an interest in the military and defence.
