This book focuses primarily on both technical and business aspects needed to select, design, develop and deploy control application (or product) successfully for multiple components in building systems. Designing and deploying a control application require multiple steps such as sensing, system dynamics modelling, algorithms, and testing. This may involve choosing an appropriate methodology and technique at multiple stages during the development process. Understanding the pros and cons of such techniques, most importantly being aware of practically possible approaches in the entire ecosystem, is critical in choosing the best framework and system application for different parts of building systems.

Providing a wide overview of the state-of art in controls and building systems, providing guidance on developing an end-to-end system in relation to business fundamentals (distribution channels, stakeholders, marketing, supply-chain and financial management), the book is ideal for fourth-year control/mechanical/electrical engineering undergraduates, graduate students, and practitioners including business leaders concerned with smart building technology.

The book is divided into two major parts. The first half of the book targets the technical aspects from design to deployment of control applications and use cases while the second half focuses on business needs and requirements.

Chapter 1 provides an overview of building, the equipment used in buildings and their typical control systems. Chapter 2 describes the commonly-used sensors and sensing techniques in building systems. Modeling methods, trade-offs between the methods, and their influence on control methods are explained in Chapter 3. Control approaches and techniques (including both advanced and prevalent techniques in building systems) and choice of appropriate control framework based on functional, system, and business requirements are described in Chapter 4. Once the control applications are designed and developed, they need to be tested and deployed on real systems. Chapter 5 presents deployment mechanisms, including software architecture, for the control applications.

Chapter 6 discusses the technical uses cases from business point of view along with Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) topics. Chapter 6 provides a smooth transition to segue into second half of the book. Chapter 7 helps readers understand the distribution channels and various stakeholders involved during the entire value chain, and their influence during multiple product stages. Business models, industry structure, and marketing aspects of a business, including the non-technical challenges that need to be overcome before launching a product, are explained in Chapter 8. Chapter 9 discusses the financial factors, return on investment, and the risks that need to be evaluated while deciding the strategy of a new product. Finally, Chapter 10 summarizes and concludes the book with an overall framework and recommendations for the readers.
