This book describes the complete design of CMOS-based multi-nuclear NMR/MRI microsystems. The authors emphasize optimizing semiconductor chip design to enhance the performance of compact CMOS-based NMR/MRI systems. They also discuss the integrated circuit design of customized modules, such as 3-D gradient controllers specifically for MRI, high-resolution multi-phase generators for advanced composite radio-frequency excitation pulse synthesis, etc. The integration of these specific modules not only drives system innovation but also expands functionality.
The rapid advancement of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology has revolutionized medical diagnostics, material analysis, and scientific research. However, traditional MRI systems remain bulky, expensive, and limited in portability, restricting their deployment in small-sample studies and resource-constrained environments. This book addresses these challenges by exploring the miniaturization of NMR/MRI systems through CMOS-based integrated circuits—a breakthrough enabling compact, cost-effective, and high-performance microsystems. CMOS technology enables high-level integration of RF, digital, and power circuitry, making it possible to embed transmitters, receivers, pulse sequencers, and gradient controllers on a single chip. These advances dramatically reduce system size, cost, and complexity—offering a scalable pathway toward compact and deployable NMR/MRI solutions.
Two generations of CMOS-based portable NMR/MRI systems are presented, along with their corresponding applications. Key innovations include: (1) integrated 3D gradient controllers and custom pulse synthesis for multi-dimensional imaging and flow velocity mapping; (2) high-voltage SOI ASICs that enable efficient RF transmission and high-quality signal acquisition; and (3) a 512-bit fine-resolution phase generator to support advanced pulse sequence generation. By combining circuit-level techniques with application-driven insights, the book provides a system-level perspective on CMOS-integrated magnetic resonance platforms. It is intended for researchers, engineers, and graduate students working in the fields of magnetic resonance instrumentation and integrated circuit design.
Discusses developments in CMOS integrated circuit design for miniaturized NMR/MRI platforms over recent decades;
Focuses on key integrated circuit design considerations for transceivers in compact NMR systems;
Details the design of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) for a miniaturized 3-D MRI platform and a compact multi-nuclei NMR/MRI system, both featuring a portable magnet, for enhanced accessibility.
