This book provides a concise introduction to switching strategies for power electronics. It provides an in-depth examination of this one concept giving a newcomer a complete immersive experience which has both the depth that is needed to gain confidence yet is simple to understand. The authors examine the basic operation of power electronic systems from scratch and with the help of simulations, how these systems can be constructed. The approach used treats power electronics similar to puzzles and rather than merely presenting them and describing how they work, explore why they came to have the construction they have, and how they could potentially be modified. All simulations are performed by the free and open source Python programming language and the free and open source circuit simulator Python Power Electronics.

Power electronic converters have become ubiquitous in modern times with the advent of smart grids, renewable energy sources and electric vehicles. This in turn has led to a rapid expansion of the power converter market with numerous companies offering a wide range of power converters for different applications. In order to sustain this growing market, the industry needs fresh young engineers who are well trained in the operation and control of power converters. Though universities have stepped up to make their courses available to the general public and not just their own students, there is still a need for detailed and stand-alone courses that serve as educational material for the next generation of power engineers.

This book is a part of a larger project that aims to provide accessible and affordable education to young engineers who wish to specialize in power electronics. This book deals with how switching strategies can be formulated for power electronic converters that are popularly used in the power industry. The approach used in the book uses logical reasoning and the basic principles of engineering to examine how power converters can be provided with gating signals for various applications. The book begins with the absolute basics, describing the philosophy behind Pulse Width Modulation and demonstrating frequency analysis tools, and progresses on to fairly complex topics such as how Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation can be implemented for a multi-level converter.

This book extensively uses simulation as a learning tool, with every switching strategy accompanied by a simulation. Moreover, by using the free and open source circuit simulator Python Power Electronics, the simulations in the book are universally accessible to a reader in any part of the world. The book also contains suggestions on how interested readers can extend the simulations provided for their own projects or according to their own interests. All the programs and simulations used in the book can be found in an online repository and can be freely downloaded by interested readers in any part of the world.
