This book presents the state-of-the-art millimetre wave antennas for next-generation 5G communications. The antenna is an integral part of a communication system, and it is regarded as an intelligent sub-system which can support beamforming, multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO), massive MIMO and other multiplexing techniques for advanced communication systems. Since propagation losses associated with the millimetre waves (mm-waves) and the signal blockage due to the objects present between transmitter and receiver restrict the performance of the millimetre wave wireless system, novel antenna topologies are required to address such issues. In the book, various aspects of the antenna design are highlighted related to millimetre wave 5G communication including 28-GHz channel characteristics, mm-wave antenna requirements, antenna design strategies for 28 GHz, MIMO/multibeam antennas and mm-wave lens antennas.

Chapter 1 introduces the millimetre wave technology and requirements to implement the mm-wave 5G wireless communication system. The propagation characteristics of the 28-GHz frequency band and different channel measurements are also presented with a brief introduction to beamforming and MIMO. Chapter 2 presents the concept of metamaterials and the realization of anisotropic media using metamaterials with an emphasis on the applications of these engineered materials for antennas. Novel metamaterial-based antennas employing uniaxial/biaxial anisotropic media that enhance the antenna radiation performance are covered in detail. Chapters 3 and 4 introduce some low-profile high-gain antennas with beam tilting capabilities to address high pathloss and misalignment at mm-wave frequencies. The wide-scan and single-/dual-beam MIMO antennas are presented in Chaps. 5 and 6 with emphasis on the diversity performance.

The polarization and pattern diversity antennas are presented in Chap. 7. Design and development of dual-beam antennas using metamaterials with an ability to combine the power at receiver side are presented in Chap. 8. Multibeam lens antenna array that results in significant reduction in hardware cost and system complexity for mm-wave massive MIMO applications is also discussed in this book. The design and development of a lens antenna array based on phase gradient metasurface lens are finally presented in Chap. 9 with an introduction to graded refractive index planar lens.

The authors believe that the material presented in this book would be extremely useful to communication and antenna engineers to address the challenges associated with mm-wave 5G wireless communication.
