CMOS: Front-End Electronics for Radiation Sensors offers a comprehensive introduction to integrated front-end electronics for radiation detectors, focusing on devices that capture individual particles or photons and are used in nuclear and high energy physics, space instrumentation, medical physics, homeland security, and related fields.
Radiation detectors are indispensable tools in many areas of science. They provide the eyes through which nuclear, particle physics and astrophysics unravel the secrets of Nature at the most fundamental levels, and they find use in several applied fields, such as medical imaging, material analysis and detection of hazardous substances, to name just a few. Modern radiation detectors are complex systems, composed of different devices that perform specific functions. A sensor converts part of the energy of the impinging radiation into an electrical signal, which is pre-processed by the front-end electronics before being further treated by a digital readout circuitry and eventually archived on disk for later inspection. Sophisticated computer programs are necessary to control the instrument operation and to analyze the data. In many applications, the design of the detector housing and of its cooling system is not trivial and poses interesting challenges also to the mechanical engineer.
This book focuses on the front-end electronics of those sensors that allow the detection of individual charged particles or photons with spatial accuracy down to a few micrometers, good energy resolution, high timing precision and low power consumption and are able to capture up to billions of events per second in a surface of the order of a square centimeter. Such performance can only be achieved by segmenting the sensitive area into many independent channels and processing the resulting signals with highly parallelized electronics. The readout and data acquisition tasks are often implemented with Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA), commercially available chips which deploy an impressive amount of gates and even full microprocessors and can be programmed to execute very complex algorithms. The large number of channels and the wide spectrum of possible requirements impose instead in many cases that the very front-end electronics, located immediately after the sensor, is realized in the form of custom integrated circuits fabricated through modern Very Large Scale of Integration (VLSI) technologies.
Emphasizing practical design and implementation, this book: Covers the fundamental principles of signal processing for radiation detectors Discusses the relevant analog building blocks used in the front-end electronics Employs systematically weak and moderate inversion regimes in circuit analysis Makes complex topics such as noise and circuit-weighting functions more accessible Includes numerical examples where appropriate
CMOS: Front-End Electronics for Radiation Sensors provides specialized knowledge previously obtained only through the study of multiple technical and scientific papers. It is an ideal text for students of physics and electronics engineering, as well as a useful reference for experienced practitioners.
