Kubernetes has rapidly become the universal standard for building and operating modern applications. Yet its networking layer—spanning CNI plug-ins, BGP peering, service mesh, eBPF dataplanes, and multicluster connectivity—remains one of the most demanding skill sets in the industry. As organizations move mission-critical and AI workloads to Kubernetes, engineers who can design, secure, and troubleshoot at this level have become some of the most sought-after professionals.

While the curriculum expects the candidate to have typically 2+ years of experience in cloud-native operations, site reliability engineering (SRE), or network engineering with a focus on containerized workloads, there’s no strict pre-requisite for taking this exam—and that includes certifications. You do not need to have, for example, passed your CKA (Certified Kubernetes Associate), CKAD (Certified Kubernetes Application Developer) or any independent or vendor network certification.

The CKNE is not reserved to folks with the “Kubernetes networking engineer” job title. In fact, this role almost doesn’t exist—yet (things may change in the future as Kubernetes adoption continues to grow). Kubernetes networking might be managed by DevOps Engineers, SREs, platform engineers, cloud architects (especially when organizations use managed Kubernetes services such as AWS EKS or Google GKE), and, in some cases, by network engineers when inter-connecting clusters to an existing network infrastructure is a requirement.

Ideally, the candidate would have had experience running and maintaining Kubernetes clusters in production and responsibility with designing, configuring and maintaining the cluster networking components. In practical terms though, it’s not always easy to be given the keys to the network. We hope that, by passing this certification, it will boost your confidence and your credentials—and earn the trust of your peers.

This book will help you pass this exam, even if you don’t routinely run mission-critical workloads in your day-to-day job. But the onus will be on you to practice in lab environments (whether they’re in cloud or self-hosted) and gain the practical knowhow necessary to tackle the exam.
